No idea, think its ok, there are heaps of commerce students but as I said you'd have to ask someone who does it.

UWS' reputation is pretty bad. Students at our school use it as a standing joke of a crap uni if we fail our HSC.

Hey, but TEN points for band 5/6 in a single subject? UNSW and UTS gives about 1 for Band 5, 2 for Band 6 in a subject and gives to a maximum of 5.

Seems like UWS is desperate for students if you ask me. With low cut-off and entry schemes giving 10 UAI points.

Ok, I'll answer each of your points, but without the quoting system, because I don't know how to use it.

1) For all we know, Gavvvv(vvvv)in is some bum who busks at Town Hall for a scrap.

2) Fair eough, I was misinformed about Business studies, although I was aware of Legal Studies.

3) Sweet heart, ask anyone who goes to UWS, and they'll tell you that even without bonus point schemes for high achievement, UWS will still grant you entry if you fall well below the cut-off. This is especially true during their second intake of students.

4) Melsc's points are important, as are mine. Just because she has been to the University, doesn't mean she is more knowledgeable on the subject.

An astronaut who has been to Space doesn't necessarily know more about space than a person who has never set foot out of Earth.

And to answer the second part of your question, yes, I do think I'm in the same position to judge a Uni, and my opinion is just as important and just as valuable as an ex-student's opinion.

That doesn't mean the person on earth knows what it is like to actually be in space. If i was going into space I'd ask the astronaut what it was like up there.

edit: don't get me wrong, i know what you're saying but imo the opinion of a ex-student>opinion of 08'rs when it comes to the uni itself.

But the person on Earth WOULD know how it's like to be in Space if they did some research. For example, I could look on Wikipedia and retrieve the following information:

Mars is smaller and somewhat farther away from the Sun than the Earth, its climate has important similarities, such as the presence of an atmosphere, the polar ice caps, seasonal changes and the observable presence of weather patterns. It has attracted sustained study from planetologists and climatologists.

From this, I can conclude that the climate of Mars is similar to Earth, and so it must be warm at times, and cold at others.

lol, see UWS would be close for me, easy to get into- but for some reason I still don't want to go there because yes, its not as prestigious as USyd or UNSW etc., however yes they do offer the same course- yet I have heard from many people there is a discrimination factor in the workforce in regards to choosing new graduates- UWS doesn't cut it...

Quite a few people have told me that "No, no UWS is GREAT!" but those are the people who go there themselves and most of them I know didn't make it to the 'prestigious' uni's as you say. However I do know a lot of people who went there for other reasons (travel, transport, friends etc.) which is cool.

I'm not trying to bag out UWS'ers but please explain how it is any better than the 'prestigious' uni's.

Every university has a school that is really good compared to other universities.

You wouldn't do engineering at uSyd, instead you would go to UNSW.

I am sure UWS has something good about it.

If the quality of course part of UWS' "good" now? Is it actually better than or equal to USyd, UNSW, ANU or say, Harvard? Obviously there is a difference in quality.

If all the goods of UWS comes down to cheap parking lots and niche practical skills (which you can also get from other unis), then I think it is fair to conclude that bads outweight goods.

uni =/= that example. i can read how to make a cake. i'll learn what tempretures to cook it at, the exact amounts of ingredients etc to make it perfectly. does this mean i can make the cake perfectly now? no. This example is about as relevant as your space one but i'm trying to show you that your opinion is just from books and probably influenced by the stigma around uws. If a friend told me "UWS is crap, i was reading stats" then you're right, i would put value on it, but more value than a ex-student who says "yeah don't bother, i went there for years. The place is lousy"? noway.

the point that you seem to refuse to see is that just because you've read about uws doesn't mean you know uws like a ex-student. you seem to believe that you are in the same position as someone who has studied there for years, experienced the educational facilities, experienced the campus life and the lecturers themselves.

i don't think it's better, the prestigious uni's have the better rep so better off going there if you get the UAI. But this doesn't mean that the uni sucks either, you'll learn the same skills afaik.
i actually want to go to UNSW because i love the city but i just can't these narrow minded uws haters..

yeh i mean, its just the fact that ... you get your degree- e.g. travel to the UK and they ask you where you got qualified from and what will you say... "University of WESTERN SYDNEY MANNN WHOOO" - maybe its a pride thing?

then again- every tom, dick and harry and sally is doing law and not everyone can get into those 'top' (lol) uni's and end up going to UWS...

all good though... but yeh runnable- thats a joke in our school too lol, "Ahh, if I mess up the HSC I can always go UWS" lmao

Mate, for all I know, UWS may have a beautiful campus, great social life, great teaching, great everything, but you can't deny they fact that there IS a stigma that hangs around UWS, and employers DO discriminate against those who attain their degree from UWS. You can argue all you like, but those are the facts.

How do I know? I've asked many many graduates and most, if not all have told me that employers do hold a certain degree of bias and they'll definitely choose a UNSW/USYD graduate over a UWS graduate.
