Is it normal for people to take on extra subjects?

I think it depends on your course.

If you're doing a BA for example, all you have to do in order to do extra units is to get a signature from someone special in the chain of command. They don't really mind WHAT you study provided you satisfy the prerequisites.

Not sure about other "streamlined" degrees (where they give you a choice of subjects and say 'PICK TWO' or something like that), you'd have to ask your corvenor or someone else doing your course.
