so im looking at doing biomed eng at usyd.. and i look at the course description and it says:

"[biomedical eng] is offered as a stream within the Mechanical Engineering degree."

..... can someone explain that to me? does it mean i hafta do mechanical engineering and then specialise in biomed in the last few years of the course?
or is it biomed from the beginning but encompassing bits of mechanical?

the course name is Engineering- Mechanical (biomedical) btw .. if that piece of info is useful =p

You may get more answers asking this in the USyd forum :).

But from my understanding, a stream means its like an option within the Mechanical Engineering major, so basically you will most likely be doing most of the Mechanical Engineering major, and then specialise in the biomed eng area.

You might get a better answer from someone who goes to USyd though. Maybe you can find like a list of subjects you need to do, then compare it with the Mechanical Engineering degree and see how similar it is? Might be a good idea to gain a better understanding :).

its basicly the mech eng degree except with one or two biomed subjects each year for first 4 years, with the 5th year nearly totally devoted to biomed

biomed eng is a masters , you cant just blow into it without doing anything else

yea i suppose so =)
does that mean you know something about it??
cuz everything ive read so far has been really vague.

in the UAC, as well as the USYD website it lists biomed eng as Mechanical (biomedical), flipping through the 'directory undergraduate' and USYD's undergrad courses booklet, its listed simply as "Biomedical engineering" without reference to mech eng

its sooo confusinggggg!! *tears hair out*

It's not that big a deal is it? If you really want to do Biomed, you have to do some sort of mechanical engineering since you need something that leads onto the actual biomed part since, as shannonm said, biomed is a masters degree.

mm.. perhaps not that big of a deal.. but it does matter =) i'd rather do biomed directly rather than have to do mech and do subjects that may or may not relate to biomed =)
anyways thanks heaps to everyone for their help .. i think ive got it mostly sorted out. You can do an undergrad biomed at usyd which is different to the mech eng course

for those who are interested, heres a link for lists of the core UoS of each engineering course offered at usyd (including biomed!!! =p!)
http://www.usyd.edu.au/fstudent/careers/study/pub/eng2004_03_bespec.pdf

and again, thanks heaps guys =D much appreciated.. im gonna aim for a combined B Eng/B Medical Science!! ^^
