i have been asked to do a speech ( 3 speeches) and i have to explore the context, relavence to own context/contemporary audeince and techniques involved. HOWEVER, i must explore this main statement that i dont understand

"great wisdom is generousl petty wisdom is contentious. Great speech is impassioned, small speech cantankerous"- Chuang-tzu

could any one of u guys just outline the basis of this statement cos i dont have a clue wat the guy means!!

thanx

i take it ur doing speeches?

do u need to refer to a specific speech/speeches?

anyways... this is where the good old dictionary comes in handy...

If u r studying speeches.. i think Martin luther king's and probably Mary Mc Lease's speeches would be best for the first part of that arguemnt...

as for the second... well Martin's speech will also be very relevant and Margaret Atwoods speech could be used for the second... or Abraham Lincoln instead of Dr. King....

Martin fits under the generous and impassioned category...

Maragret Atwood's "spotty handed villainesses" would probably be cantankerous (wateva that means)

petty wisdom... i guess u could refer to one of the speeches tht weren't personally written by the people who delviered the speeches such a that of P.J Keating (i think someone else wrote it...)

don't know... hope i helped...

by the way were currently doing the same subjects...

yay...!!!

ignore the last 2 statements...

well i can sort of see how u can use Socrates to form the first part of the argument/response

for example u could refer to socrates as the generously wise and his audience (i think it was 501 jurors) as the contentiously wise

nice selection of speeches.. but i would think for that specific quote u'd need to tackle it from a perspective other than that of freedom..(not saying don't but from what i understand from that quote i think it's more of a comparison between style and technique rather than theme).. look don't go by anything i say as i am currnelty blabbering on about stuff... but if u find anything i say worth noting well then be it.. if not.. well then .... umm.... yeh!!!
