that tiny little green box under your name in the post. you can give rep to people by clicking on the scale-like icon at the bottom of the light blue section [where everyone's info - eg name etc] next to their post. for every box, you need 100 rep points. you can check how many you have by going to user cp in the title bar, or by clicking on the scale icon on your own posts.
So other than making fancy boxes, do reps do anything else?

You don't actually have to know the symbols for the number sets, just the words "real numbers" or "integers" would suffice...

Okay I'm doing Trigonometric Equations and there a few symbols in my book that I don't get.

sinx = sina

or

What's K and J? And what's that symbol that looks like a capital E mean? If it isn't too much trouble could you guys also explain what the rule is saying?
E means Element
Z means Integer (from the german word 'Zahl')
R means Real
I don't think there is a 'J' but i could be wrong
C is Complex
N is Natural numbers
Q is Rationals (from Quotient since any rational number is of the form (a/b) where a,b E Z)
You might have to know empty sets, union and interections in prelim also.

It means 'element'. It's saying that 'k is an element of the integers'.

If you didn't want to use the symbols, you could just say "Where k is any integer". I think one of our teachers takes a mark off if you don't state that, or do not denote that it's an element of the integers using the appropriate symbols.

Though you would think it would be a Z instead of a J, since Z is the letter which represents the set of integers.
J is the old fashioned symbol for integer, Z is the latter symbol, and is used in universities now.

Apparently J was used in NSW, which is why it is commonly used in HSC textbooks.

It's one way to show yr appreciation for help rendered. It's acknowledgement. It is courtesy. It's good manners. u should learn not to take the goodies u receive for granted. It's civilized conduct. Otherwise we'd all be feral.
