i'm doing actuary/computing
the recommended units for first year is
semester 1: acst151, econ110, stat171, comp125....
semester 2: acst101, acst211, accg105, econ111, math133

i wanted to kno if econ110 is any useful as it is not an exemption subject like econ111 . Also econ110 sounds a bit like what I learnt in hsc economics....but most likely at a more thorough level......
if it isn't that essential, i was thinking of replacing econ110 with either accg100 or acst101 in first semester ...

any suggestions appreciated
thanks!

You need both ECON110 and ECON111 as a prerequisite for ECON201 (macroeconomic analysis, a subject in semester 2, second year actuarial studies)

I think everyone doing actuarials here are doing all of the recommended units, except they're also advising (past students, i.e. moderators) acst101 to be done in first semester

My guess is because there's math133 and acst211 in second semester, which apparently are arduous subjects

So, my timetable now consists of 20 hours in first semester and 16 hours in second

Hoped that helped :)

We're atuarial students; we're allowed. (there's another thread in the main macq section about this)

"No, a full time load is 12 credit points per semester - you will need special approval to do any more than that. "
-Leonie

I thought on the timetable it said 14 cp was maximum... you need academic approval to do any more than that

So that's one piece of misinformation.... :)

I don't know, I'm just going to enrol
edit: you'll get your academic approval here anyway, i hope :p

And it is in our recommended program of study.. (i.e. 15cp in second semester)

Dont worry too much about it

The academic advisor said some past students found it extremely difficult to cope with the work load, (but also said some did alright)
I think you're only allowed if you get an extremely high uai... cuz when he asked me what I received, he said no...

Yeh, she was like "i'd consider it if you got a UAI of 100". Pfft. Why would anyone that wants to do actuarial studies study hard enough to get 100? We know the cutooff is gonna be low (compared with like law and med) and so work accordingly... Not happy...

No, i was talking to the lady, and she wouldn't let me. I kept on insisting but she's like "we made the recommended study program for a reason" and that it would be unfair to the others if she let me do it. I've gotta speak to this Piet guy when the sem starts...

That chick is annoying, i answered someone's question on that board once and she told me off. The thread was named something like "your opinions please". Plus she takes days/week to reply.
