Hey.

I'm doing pathways too... I've looked into my required marks to get a 90 UAI considering my previous 67 UAI, so I should be able to help you out a bit. But first I need a little more info...

Ok, which english did you do(Advanced, Standard, ESL)?
And which maths are you going to do(General or the other)?

Also, if you can tell me what exact UAI you need, I'll be able to give you a rough idea of the average HSC marks you'll need in those subjects to get that UAI.

Otherwise I'll just work out what your UAI would be if you got, say, 85(tell me a different mark if you want) in each subject this coming year. How does that sound?

OK. So you got a HSC mark of 58 for English Standard and a HSC mark of 86 for Japanese beginners?

This is based on an average mark, so if you do better in one subject you can do a little worse in another. Also, this is all a prediction based on the 2004 marks. Don't take it as absolute, it's just a rough outline of what you might need. So, if you need a 75 UAI:

For IPT you'll need about an 87 HSC mark, which is just below the 90% group(You need to be near the top 10% of students doing that course).

For IT you'll need about a 92 HSC mark, which is about halfway between the 90% and 99% group(You need to be in about the top 5% of students).

For General Maths you'll need about an 85 HSC mark, which is just above the 90% group(You need to be within the top 10% of students doing that course).

As for Standard English. Let's say you did it again, and got a HSC mark of 75 (90% group...). These are the marks you would need for a 75 UAI in that case:

For IPT you'll need about an 84 HSC mark, which is between the 75% and 90% group(You need to be in about the top 20% of students doing that course).

For IT you'll need about a 90 HSC mark, which is just above the 90% group(You need to be in about the top 10% of students).

For General Maths you'll need about an 82 HSC mark, which is just below the 90% group(You need to be in about the top 15% of students doing that course).

So there you go. Even if you get 15 more HSC marks in Standard English, the required marks only drop by two or three. Plus, you've got the extra time required to complete the course, which might make quite a difference to you. But then, you already know the course, so you could probably do a lot better the second time around.

If you think you can do better than a 75 HSC mark in Standard English, let me know, and i'll recalculate the required marks. Otherwise, I don't really think it's worth your while doing it again...

Ask away if you want anything else too. I hope that this helps.

In any case, good luck. :)

id say you shud re-do standard english. that mark will crucify you if you dont do as well as expected in your other subjects. even though i can understand how you might never want to do english again i think you need to

I just worked that out based on the figures for last year's HSC performances. UAC provides the figures, I do the math... plus a bit of estimation. That's why it's not perfectly accurate. :)

As for whether you can do it. What do you think? You know yourself better than anyone else. Do you think you are a top 10% student for those subjects? I think it's possible if you apply yourself, do lots of study, etc... Take the subjects seriously, and you can do it.

I don't think you should do standard english again though. Your mark was fairly low, but you'll have to get a really good mark if you do it again for there to be any significant effect on your UAI. If you can't get 80 or more in english, you might aswell forget it. I think you're better off spending more time focusing on those three subjects, especially if you don't enjoy english.

That said though, you really do have to get great marks in the other subjects... Those estimates I've given above are the minimum you'll need to just scrape in, and if marks go up this year, you'll have to do better. You might want to have a look at the syllabuses on the board of studies website, just to give you an idea of what the course entails... That way you'll have a better idea of where you're at.
