Historians for Minoan Society (1 Viewer)

I have been trying to look up for some modern historians on Minoan society but cant really find any.. i know there is Gae Callender, but i guess shes classified as an "ancient hostorian" ( no clue how that works!! ) but apart from her, i havent got anyone else to quote or refer to.

I guess theres a bit abt this gournia lady while Aurthur Evans is an archeologist, so i aint sure of i can even talk abt him and his theories. Neither do the true ancient historians like Homer or Herodotus mention Crete anywhere.

Would anyone know which historians i could reseach and tak about??

Hm well i dont actually do it but i dont think youd get alot of primary literary sources for Minoan society, youd have to rely on archaeological evidence and the works of certain archaeologists, as for literary sources try CSU's site, they have a heap of secondary stuff youll be able to quote (links below),

I think a few of them were off the teacher.

Pendlebury was stupid and said that it was impossible to know what kind of social order existed in minoan crete. He was obviously wrong, but from memory his theories were from 50(?) years ago.

Brennan said the society was primarily goddess-based, matrilineal rather than patrilineal.

Evesdaughter said something about how it was incorrect to deduce that the society was run by males and criticises Evan's work. She also said that the throne found at knossos was for female-shaped buttocks and the griffins flanking it were symbols of femininity.

Undoubtedly Nanno Marinatos said something about women and religion. I think about how the western court of the palace at knossos was for women and religious duties.

I had Whitelaw down for saying how the house tombs found at Mochlos give evidence to social positions due to the grave goods, proximity to settlements and architectural elaboration.

Platon said something about the "influence of female sensitivity" and how the society was peaceful.

That's all i have from moonie's list.

Try googlin' them, thats were oi got most of em, but i cant find the sites, sos. Also, books at ur local UNI library! Newcastle UNI had some good ones on Minoans

Oh yeah duck. I'm going to drive all the way to newy to get books....

In case you didn't know i live in a HOLE! And the great city library (i use the term loosely) has only one book in which i could use. Yeshiree it's the almighty Gae Callender's Eye of Horus...and someone has it out. Grr!
