So far I only know what kind of area I might be interested in, Japanese Militarism. Which we had to do an assignment on for Prelim Modern History. I did something along the lines of 'assess the influence the Japanese Military had on the Japanese government during 1930s'. Could I make my History Project question similar to this, or maybe like a different aspect of Japanese Militarism? Are we allowed to do our project on Prelim topics?

Heya,

this has been discussed a lot on the boards. I'll give you the simplified answer:

1. According to the syllabus, you should not do projects that significantly overlap with prelim or HSC content.
2. However, your teacher(s) have the final say, so that does not mean you cannot do those projects.

Ask your teachers -- the bos rules, whilst unequivocal, are usually expected to be enforced by the teachers.

Okay thanks for that, oh yeah, does Macquarie University have a good history section in their library? I hate State Library it's really confusing, and Fishers like been my main source of information up until now.

Yeah it's pretty good, although Fisher is better for modern history stuff.

Navigating any library, though, is not about 'sections'. For ancient history, there is no section, there's a section for languages (PJ), for geographic history (DT), religion (BL), etc. Same goes for modern history.

If you don't know what you're looking for, your trip might be a bit of a waste. Ie, make sure you check the catalogue first.

Fisher would be excellent for japanese militarism resources at least last time i went there. Best to check the online catalogue to ensure the books are actually on the shelf though first :p

I recommend you use both histories from a western liberal perspective (so the more conventional historians such as Spector and John Costello) and a socialist or japanese perspective (if i recall, Iriye).

These sources might be more specific towards the HSC pacific conflict topic, but a useful resource nonetheless, esp if you critically analyse how their writings are not part of a vacuum and so forth.
