because the school ranks actually mean a hell of a lot. you could top a school (and maybe the whole surrounding area) thats in the western burbs of sydney and you might only score around 80 whereas coming close to last in the top 3 schools could still mean 85.

I attended a school in the western suburbs which was ranked >300, and I still managed to get above 95. The school ranks do matter, but not as significant as you stated.
