i think it's about that. i remember, at UTS, it was the weighted average mark of your 13 best law subjects, and at least a pass in the Honours thesis elective. the marks are then ranked and the best person gets UM (not me :()

Is there a thesis elective for every honours in law? I've never heard of such a compulsory thing at Usyd. From what it seems to me, its just a 75 WAM across either all law subjects completed by the person (or best of X subjects).

you're right. the thesis elective is a requirement of USyd LLB Hons...
Honours in Law

There is no separate Honours year in Law. Honours are awarded on the basis of your weighted average marks in all law units, including those taken as part of a combined degree and any failures.

because, dear, a BCL at Oxford is greater than a LLM at USyd.

Oh wow, UTS Law honours only requires an extra subject, not an extra year. That's pretty good then! If it was like that for IT, I'd probably do it.

Depends. Some unis intergrate that 'extra' subject into a compulsory subject so that it really isn't an 'extra' subject as such.
5 years + another year of honours is fucking fucked. :p

UNSW History

For anyone interested, the Faculty of Law went through a massive debate about the proposed introduction of honours in my time at UNSW (1994-1998). All of the info re arguments for and against should be able to be accessed in the student law society's archive or the faculty's archive. Maybe ask a law librarian about it - I reckon they'd be delighted to drag that stuff out for you.

My understanding of the upshot of the debate was that for reasons to do with the history of the creation of the Law Faculty at UNSW and its (broadly speaking) egalitarian/socialist ethos, merely handing out Honours based on WAM was considered too elitist.

Cheers

consider this. you might not get appointed until you're 50ish.

by then, i will be happily retired and lecturing legal foundations part-time. :)

Hapilly retired? Obviously your passion for the law is far less than mine and Kirb-daddies.

In 50 years I'll be the new Kirby - you'll be jealous.
