How are you studying for Chem? (4 Viewers)

I'm just going to read through the textbook and read through some BOS notes, does anybody have good dot point notes in a word document or something they could send me, please?

If I just read through the textbook (Conquering Chem.) is there anything I would miss that we should know?

I'm going to do as many past papers as I can. I've already done some, and I've already found some trends - there are almost always ethanol-as-an-alternative-fuel questions. Some of the potential seven-markers include CFCs, ethanol and water management.

I've already done the end-of-chapter exercises from CC, but I'm going to go over them again.

I suggest you use more than one textbook, however, if you decide to stick to only one, CC is the best. I have Chemistry Contexts too, which is sometimes good at providing information, but it has a lot of irrelevant crap, and sometimes cuts down on syllabus-required points. The safest way is to constantly refer to the syllabus to get a grasp on what you do and don't need.

Found out yesterday this guy in my class (Captain_pi) is collaborating ~100 8 mark questions that cover the whole course, and providing answers for everyone I guess i'll just read through them then *confidence level rises*.

Yeah, like Dreamerish Im just doing as many past papers as possible. Hopefulyl I can finish that success one book, and then some

This would be a better way than only past papers, for two reasons-
- BOS would probably want to test topics that they havent before (to make it harder for us)
- and the syllabus will give you a complete overview, whereas past papers
dont test every single dotpoint

Dont just read through the text books, its best to make your own notes because they dont follow syllabus that well for example structure of cellulose question you would need to say
1. H bonds
2. linear structure
3. bulky CH2CH alternate on either side
4. long unbranched chain
to get the full marks and not all text books would include just these 4 points. ANd theres lots of eqns you have to memorise and some others you dont, you need to ask your teacher

my tutor recommended this and its actually working. before i did past papers over past papers. and last week and sat down, looked thtough the who chem syllabus, ticked what i didn't know and went through it thoroughly and then did past papers again.

I know, it has mistakes too - such as naming styrene as phenylbenzene.

I still love it. Probably because I'm so used to it.

and i think i am wrong, phenyl ethene is the polymer of benzyl ethene

I just don't know who to believe anymore.

Every teacher has told us that benzyl ethene is the accepted answer, CC says otherwise, and apparently so does the site up there. At this point I'm thinking benzyl ethene and ethenylbenzene are more likely to be correct. CC's phenylethene looks like it's wrong ...

What edition is yours? I just checked mine (third edition), it's got ethynlbenzene. Phenylethylene is listed as a synonym on that site, maybe it can be made from a few very common monomers?
