How bad is a pass average? (1 Viewer)

Ok...I'm asking this because I'm thinking of going to SIBT in case I don't get into Bcomm in Macquarie. I heard that even though SIBT puts you into second year Macquarie once you've done the course, no matter what your results are ie. Credit/Distinction, Macquarie will put it down as a pass?

So just how bad is a pass average? Will it lead to future unemployment? Do companies actually employ someone who has a pass average in Commerce?

Even if they do, you still have 2 years to drag that average up to a C/D/HD average, and if you explained the situation to future employers I'm sure they'd understand.

From memory, that sounds correct... But we could be wrong. You could confirm by calling up the Registrar's department at MQ, and they'll tell you (or, give it 2 weeks and when I'm there I'll do it myself for you).

Can't speak so much for commerce specifically, but have talked to various law firms about it... it seems to be mainly the top tier firms that're interested in your high marks; the others seem to say it's a factor, but they've got no specific number they're looking for. In other words, your experience and the 'fit' between your personality and their corporate culture are very (or perhaps more) important.

...that's as a graduate, of course. If you're looking for jobs PRIOR to grduating (ie while you're still at uni), I've not had or heard anyone even ask about it, let alone base any aspect of their hiring decision on it. :)

You've got it all wrong.

I went to SIBT, I finished with marks between a distinction and credit average.

When I transferred into second-year B.Com-Accg at Macquarie, my GPA was reset to zero, and I was given 24 credit points advanced standing. eStudent still lists my SIBT marks in my course details, so I guess they will be on my transcript when I finish at Macquarie?

Anyway, after first semester of this year, my GPA was back up around a credit average. This mark was good enough for me to transfer into the double-degree of B.App.Fin with B.Com-Accg.

Macquarie do not list it as a pass, they list you as exempt, you'll enter Macquarie with no GPA... which is good if you go bad in the first year, cuz you've got a chance to redeem your GPA, and it doesn't really matter if you went well because after one semester at Macquarie your GPA will be high again, like mine.

Employers will look at your marks. You'll want a credit average, but after you transfer from SIBT to Macquarie, you'll have years to get your GPA up there.

But they'll also look at other shit. You can have a distinction average, but if you're a weedy little asian who speaks broken english and has no social skills, then your perfect 4.0 GPA will mean shit all.

And then, you're stuck up unemployment creek without a Centrelink application form.

No.

Your GPA will be what you make it after studying at MQ. Previous marks don't come into it, except when trying to get in.

Hey there
Just a questions regarding GPA.
I know the GPA calculator thing, and say you get 4 passes your GPA is 2.0 and 4 credits would be 3.0 - say uve just done semester one of year one. However, a lecturer for BBA 111 mentioned the introduction of a new system, basically, the one UNSW uses - WAM (weighted average marks). He said thle idea behind this is to give you a 'fairer' sort of mark. For example, for ur GPA, a Pass (with 50 exactly) counts for exactly as much as a Pass (with a mark of 64). So the WAM system discriminates between marks in the same 'band' e.g. high pass vs. low pass and high credit vs. low credit etc.

Is this true?

It's all relative.

When the unfair Macquarie system is used, internal transfers basically, everyone is in the same boat. So, it isn't really unfair.

When it comes to applying for jobs, in my experience, they don't really ask for your GPA as such. I guess they are aware of the different GPA calculation systems used. They get you to submit an average of your marks (or all of your marks). So noone really gets treated unfairly.

I would have thought it would have been a bigger deal; ie- I'd have heard it in the introductory lectures this semester. I doubt the reliability of your lecturer when he says that the new system is being introduced (Someone would have posted a press release here as soon as possible if it were true! ;))

I think there is some kind of system that also weights your marks by difficulty.

I.e. first year subs contribute less to your GPA than third year (and rightly so!)

Not at Macquarie. The only difference is based on credit point weightings.

Other unis do. I know of Monash that does it for sure.

hey i was just wondering about GPA's, i just want to clarify this scenerio:

1) do gpa's progress from 1st yr to 2nd to 3rd ... or do u start with a fresh one each sem or yr ??

2) some 2nd/3rd yr subjects have a criteria that u must have a certain gpa before they let u in e.g. say a 2nd yr, sem 2 course states u must have atleast a gpa of 2.5, does this include from previous yr or a fresh gpa from sem 1 in yr 2 ??

thanx alot

1 - GPA's are a continuouse assessment of your performance. So it carries forward every semester.
2 - Refer to 1. Generally, the in-charges' are strict about letting people in (from my experience....which was to do with having enough CP, but may still apply).

(I hope that somehow answere your questions)
