Force all immigrants to accept Australia culture or go back to where they came from.

It would be possible to enfore it in public. It would only be impossible to stop people doing it in private and that doesn't bother anyone anyway.

highwayman makes a pretty good comment about equality as something that pretty much overratted.

might be a bit hard to simply deport minority groups as nice as it would be we'd have someone bitching at us for ofloading all our shitkickers on there country ...... hmm..... were would we stick em?

The fact is, Australia has NO culture. So you cant expect Italians, Greeks, Asians, Arabs, and others to just come here and join you all at the pub.
To say that Australia has no 'culture' is to assume that other countries have a 'culture'. There's nothing to be gained by romanticising the other to the detriment of what is right before you.

But the only way to understand why 'assimilation' didn't work the way others wanted it to is to analyse exactly what it means. And in truth, how can you ask someone to be something they're not?

You cannot say that Greece or Italy has no culture - because they do. And its so strong that they didnt lose it when they came here. Is that what makes many people racist here? Funnily enough, most of the whingers are those rich North Shore types - who drink 'Cafe Lattes' all the time and substitute English words with Italian words because its 'chic'. I know that a massive generalisation, but I think its a bit of a cliche.
I'm not in favour of assimilation, and I was just trying to criticise your point regarding Australia's culture.

I didn't say that such countries have no 'culture', I merely said that you are mistaken if you think that Australia is essentially a cultural wasteland.

That all aside, it's interesting to note that what many consider to be an alien culture in many cases no longer exists back in the home country - immigrants often cling to what they consider to be dear in order to differentiate themselves from the cultural mainstream, and in many cases this has led to immigrants themselves romanticising what they consider to be their 'culture'.

Cultures of the sort that we are discussing are dynamic and they only exist in relation to the other (be it an external or internal other), and I'm just of the opinion that there is nothing to be gained by suggesting that Australia has no culture merely because other notions of culture appear to be more lively and 'wholesome' than our own.

Edit: In saying this, I'm not saying that I can quantify the Australian 'culture'. Much like that of any other nation or nation-state, it is forever being reinterpreted and repackaged by all who engage with or within it, and as such its meaning is quite fluid and complex.

U know, and i'm not having a jibe or anything, but reading that post and understanding it made me, for a fleeting moment, feel so intellectual.

LOL.

Culture is bullshit. Just because you're Turkish doesn't mean there's something in your genes which makes you predisposed to like kebabs, or Italian doesn't mean you're predisposed to like pasta, etc. Creating ghettos based on blood has an overall negative effect on society, and it's my opinion that if culture were more left up to the individual to mix and match what they please that this problem would be significantly diminished.

how can you say that australia doesn't have a culture? of cource it does it's been built up since colonisation all you have to do is look at some examples of Ausstralian concepts such as mate ship.

perfect example is in the pow camps in the vietnam war:

each country was given the same amount of food for all of the prisinors,

-- America laid it out and people ended up paying for there food no money no food, that simple. alot of americans died of starvation.

-- England worked the food through the chain of command, the higher roles in the army had first choice to the food and it went down like that through the ranks. many died from starvation

--AUSTRALIA shared the food out equally between all troops regardless of rank.

as if that isn't a prime example of a strong Australian culture???

I think Australia has a culture but it just isn't as obvious, unique or tradition orientated as most other cultures

Australian culture is a lot less rigid than others, and its core element is bringing people together, this is the kind of culture that doesn't encourage segregation.

Public nudity should be decriminalised, as every man, woman and child is equal when they are in the buff. Under Howard, puritanical religious movements have been given strength to outlaw other people's behaviour by trying to justify what are good and bad "morals". Fuck off!

So long as there were no significant hygiene issues with such a policy, I'd support it too.
