It's possible to get in, but you'd really want a good grounding in the basic science subjects if you want to do well in it.

I'd suggest contacting the Med advisors at UNSW directly and presenting them with your little dilemma.

In NSW it is illegal for institutions to set "prerequisites". Thus, from a technical point of view, you can still get in. However, the "assumed knowledge" is just a non-restrictive version of the same thing, and most medical schools expect the Big Three (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) if not at LEAST two of the above.

Interstate they require at least Biology and Chemistry, though it is still possible for you to receive an offer and take a bridging course.

For general entry into undergraduate medicine at all institutions you must sit the UMAT examination. You can register (and pay through the nose) around May~June. If your results and projected UAI are good enough some institutions will invite you for interview late in the year. If there is no interview, selection will be based on UAI (usually within the >98 range) and UMAT performance, though if there is an interview that will be taken into account as well.

I was talking to my course director at UTS, and he said that one of his pet hates is "B Medical Sciences". Apparently it is a degree with the sole aim of getting students into Graduate Medicine programs by teaching them first year Chemistry, Physics and Biology. He said they sould call it B GAMSAT, but that would make it too obvious. :uhhuh:

so is getting an interview good or not good? I thought all people had to do the UMAT to get in but now i get the impression that if you did really well in your UMAT and get a high prjected UAI, they won't need you to take the interview.

I want to do med, but afriad of the interview because i don't do as much service to school and community as i could have done and that gives them a bad impression compared to some others who may be more 'rounded'.

HAHAHAHA!! That's hillarious man! Could you tell me who this course director is? I'm doing B Medical Science as one of my degrees this year and I'd love to have a chat with this guy about it.

No, if an institution interviews candidates, not getting one means you can't be considered for the course. Thus, interview = good.

Sure, you can get a job afterwards. But that's only if you suck so much that they still won't let you into med. :p (sorry to B Med Sci people!)

I don't remember his name, he's the UTS course director for B Science in Nanotechnology. Where are you doing your Med Sci degree? If you like I'll go find out who he is and tell you later.

i heard that only a few medical science students get into medicine- so ru saying that the majority of medical science students suck? since majority aren't gonna get into medicine? :D

Ok, the Course Director for Nanotechnology at UTS is Associate Professor Mike Ford, he's the one that UTS stole from Flinders. Great character, that one.

Anyway, you could take a bridging course, though you'd probably only be able to do one. I'd suggest Chemistry as that's the only one that every uni (except in NSW) calls a prerequisite. Everything else is recommended study.
