i got vista, so not sure if it'd work with xp/2000/me/98/95/dos/unix etc:

right click the taskbar, click on properties, click the notification area tab, then click the check boxes for network and power, and u can click the customize button and set other stuff/remove stuff from ur notification icons area.

If using Vista:

Right click on the desktop, Personalize
On the bottom left hand size click, Taskbar and Start Menu
Notification Area > System icons > tick Network & Power.

:)
