I've just recently installed Mac OS X on my PC so I'm a bit of a noob, how do I make my menu bar transparent?

Did you still need a hand?
Try this:
1. Open System Preferences.
2. Click on "Desktop & Screen Saver".
3. Click on the "Desktop" tab.
4. There is a new "Translucent Menu Bar" checkbox.
EDIT: ah did you mean transparent or translucent?!?
