As in beat everyone in all your subjects for the year or for the entire duration of your degree?

Come first in all your subjects, that's the easiest way to guarantee being dux (bearing in mind that could be difficult to do in a competitive school )

Edit: although he does seem to be one of those ultra dedicated kind of people.

It's not really something you can 'become.' You have to be born with the superior mental capacity to become dux.

Getting a university medal requires you to essentially top all of your courses and have deep-seeded involvement within University life (academia, sporting, cultural, community etc.)
