hey guys, I'm sitting for my hsc this year and I'm kinda puzzled about the ranking system.. so how is it done say i came 1st for english with a mark of 90 for the assessment would that be my my actual internal mark. could you please explain how does it work and whether my marks i get now are taken as my internal mark or does the board of studies assist my internal and external mark, please provide an example that will help me understand it better.. thanks in advance

If you get 90 for your internal mark from your school and you rank 1st what will happen is that the highest exam mark earned by your cohort will become your internal mark and you will keep you own exam mark so:

You came first internally but second externally with 93 and first was given 95 you would end up with (93+95)/2= 94 as your final HSC

Now if you came first internally and first externally with 93 external you would get (93+93)/2 = 93 as your final HSC.

The reason for using the exam marks to adjust the internal marks is because that is the only common task done by all students in the state so it is used as the guide to 'moderate' the internal marks.

NB if you come 2nd or lower then the moderated mark you will get will reflect both your rank and the gap between the ranks and is NOT a simply 2nd ranked student gets the 2nd exam mark as that could be very unfair.

oh i see how it works!! one more thing, so basically do they accumulate the gabs between each mark in our trial exam and take it under consideration. so say for our assessment mark the gab between me and the first is 20 marks and im coming 4th. and in the hsc exam the highest was 98 and the first person is rewarded with that mark would i take 78 as my internal since the gap between me and the first is 20 marks? overall the assessment that we do are determined to take our rank out of hit and the gab between each mark?

The assessment mark the school sends in will be more than just from the trial exams.

Yes the gaps are kept (up to a point due to aligning of the exam marks) so a 20 mark gap between first and second (or any other ranks) will be maintained.

e.g. 20 marks between 3 and 4 would see say 3rd get 88 and 4th about 70.

Just another note - remember that the top mark in the exams determines the top mark in the internals so if the school sends you in with 90 but the top exam mark for your school is 75 then the internal mark will drop to that 75 (that would suggest that your school was marking too leniently).
