So ANU early offer came out today, and I'm surprised I didn't get an offer, and was instead put onto the waiting list.

Was this purely because of my yr11 results? Or was it because I lacked extra curricula activities? I personally don't think my year 11 results were that bad at all, and the courses I applied for only 1 was 98 atar the rest were all only like 80-92ish atar requirement.

Here are my ranks for Yr11 semester 1 & sem 2 (semester 2 was not a weighted avg, only 2 assessment tasks):
Eng adv - 8/160, 75/160
eng ext - 69/90, 18/90
math adv - 108/160, 95/160
mx1 - 74/150, 65/150
phys - 72/95, 61/95
engi - 4/45, 23/45
eco - 58/70 , 45/70

Sure, I decreased in ranks for some of them, but I wasn't at the very bottom for any of my subjects.

For extra curricular I had things like, public speaking awards - distinction and high distinction, grade 6 piano, charities committee volunteer, peer support for new yr11s, school basketball team for 5yrs, 4yrs of language school. ex 1st grade soccer, ex choir member & robotics team (all of these I quit during/ start of yr11 due to having not enough time - not really an excuse but I had a lot of tutoring going on and was struggling to manage my time properly). I know these aren't that impressive, but honestly I didn't really have much else since I'm kinda introverted.

My school is also ranked quite well (top 15) so I'm not really concerned with not getting an early offer since I can just go UNSW and USYD, but rather I'm just confused as to why all my friends got an early offer (they put similar courses as well) but I somehow didn't... Any thoughts?

(I'm more concerned since if these aren't enough for an early offer, then I really need to pick up on my extra curriculars in university and force myself to socialise since I've slacked off even more in yr12 - though I'm not scared its just not my cup of tea) Greatly appreciated!

BS uve done amazing, its definitely impressive
but what did u apply for? some programs have a much higher demand than others, like i think international security studies + government would be more competitive bc of anu's proximity to the parliament house + gov. jobs
I didn't get any of my 4 preferences:
1. Bachelor of Advanced Computing (Research & Development) (Honours) - full or part time (this ones 98 so I'm not surprised)
2. Bachelor of Actuarial Studies - full or part time (92 still its fine)
3. Bachelor of Advanced Computing (Honours) - full or part time (85 atar)
4. Bachelor of Computing - full or part time (this ones 80 tho)

that's acc so weird, I'm so sorry abt that
there are many other universities that will prolly take u in for these exact degrees, don't lose hope! i genuinely cant think of a reason why they wouldn't accept u

what were your letter grades? I might be wrong but im p sure they consider letter grades for early entry and if ur school is harsh with those then that might’ve hurt ur chances

We didn't have an overall letter grade, but they did provide for different student outcomes.

So for sem1,sem2 it was:

eng adv - all A, then 2A, 2B
eng ext - all b, then all A
madv&mx1 (for some reason they combined the outcomes for this) - all Bs, 1C, 1A, then all B, 1 A
phys - C, C then B, B
engi - all A, then All A, 2 B
eco - all B, 1A, then All A

again, not that terrible except for sem1 phys but I did also improve in that for sem2.

not sure if it matters but if I go onto studentsonline all my grades for those courses were all A's except for eco and engineering (somehow only rank 1 engi got an A)

yeah I have no clue why you wouldn’t get in given those marks that sucks

Can you check on Students Online as to what your 'official' letter grades were? You should be able to get it by logging in, then going to results, then going to 2022 HSC on the drop down menu. I'm also lost as to why you wouldn't have got an offer, unless your Students Online letter grades were drastically different from your internal school grades (but I'm not sure why that would be the case).

For context, I got an offer to study Law (97 ATAR) with five As and two Bs in a top 30 or so school. So I don't understand why you didn't get an offer.

Would it be worth calling ANU and asking? I know my careers advisor did that for someone in my year - I'm not sure of the outcome, but it might be good to give it a shot?

That's strange. Perhaps they have high benchmarks for computer science, and besides, I didn't apply for early offer schemes to ANU and I still got in, so don't worry too much. If you keep up the good work you've been doing in Year 11 and get similar results, then you'll get a high ATAR and they'll look favourably on that.

hmmm, are these grades not considered good enough for early offer? I thought they were decent... :(

I'm not too concerned about getting in since I'd probably go UNSW or USYD anyways, but I'm just worried as to why my results weren't sufficient enough, and what I could do to improve my chances. Thanks guys for all the help!!

Yep maybe, but my friends who had similar/slightly worse grades got in to the courses I applied for.

But otherwise yes it doesn't really matter since so far I've been doing decently, if not better, compared to my yr11. My predicted ATAR is roughly low 99s/high 98s so hopefully I'd go into UNSW compsci instead. I just wasn't sure at the time hence why I applied for early offer.

Yeah no that's literally the same amount of A's and B's that I got + I'm in a lower ranked school and I got into law. I think there must have been a mistake unless you forgot to submit something when applying? But I don't think that would be the case.
If you would prefer UNSW and USYD you can probably just let it go but if you want ANU as an option I'd definitely say call them and ask. Because I'm really confused.
