A friend of mine did his HSC in 2002 and got 96.30.
His preferences went:
1. law at sydney
2. law at unsw
3. law at macquarie
...
...
6. arts at sydney

he qualified for number 3 (from 2002 AND 2003 cutoffs), and that's what he was aiming for, but got offered number 6 (arts). how is that possible?

People with a UAI higher than his picked the course, and filled it. So when it got to his UAI, even though its higher than the cut off, the course was already full.

A UAI higher than the cut off gives you a good chance at getting in, but it is not guaranteed.

You can't go by the 2003 cutoffs, you have to go by the 04 ones

that's not right
the uai cutoff is determined by the people that choose it. they fill up a predetermined number of places and the uai of the last person IS the cutoff.
anyone else have a suggestion?

its not based on cutoffs alone
when u are transferring, ur score is based on 50% UAI and 50% 1st year results - his 1st yr results may have dragged his combined score down

and also, Transferring students do not follow the Year 12 UAI cutoffs, they follow the Non-Recent school leaver cutoffs, which may be higher or lower than UAI cutoffs depending on demand and how many places are allocated to transferring students

sorry, not transferring. he took a year off. his preferences are all in order and were in place by the correct date, so it's all very odd. thanks anyway guys.

HEY ! My friend got into B Commerce @ UNSW (2004 Cut-off : 96.XX) but he received a UAI of 94.XX. How does that work ? From what i know he didn't get that EAS Scheme or did anything else eg. write letters and / or bug the hell outta the uni people.. What the hell ?

It is know that unis sometimes accept students below the cut off. Used for advertising a high cut off (makes it look popular) whereas people in the course might actually have a UAI lower than that.

he didn't defer, so i think he just applied normally. so he contacted club mac today and was told that because he didn't complete the hsc in 2003 he was considered in a completely different category, and would have required 98 to get into the course, instead of 95.40. sounds pretty unfair to me.
