Probably depends on the quality of the words used and the way in which it addresses the concept of your area of study topic. Markers looked for a grasp and flair of language, not the number of words used

I looked in the example responses, and there was one in the "high mark range" and it was probably only 500 words long...I'd probably try to write about 900-1000 words.

mine are never more than 500 words, you can perfectly demonstrate your understanding and application of a concept as well as language techniques within 500-600 words, even less. I average 14 - 14½ for creative pieces.

My two cents.

Hmm...although some teachers and students recommend that you spend equal time on each Section. But I guess it's probably OK to write ~750-800 words for Section II (30 mins), leaving around 55 mins for Section III.

My creative pieces' are around 500 words too, or shorter... I try to make it 'short but powerful'. And I usually write them in 20-25 minutes so I can spend more time on the essays.

your sections should be 40mins each
in 40mins, you should be able to write 1000 to 1200 words...even more if your hand writes like its on steroids

creatives should be prepared to perfection (many many drafts) then in the exam, twisted nicely into the question

fair enough. For my half yearly creative i wrote a 'slice of life' on journeys through time (last years hsc creative topic, or one of) and did a philosophical take on the journey of the world through one second. i'll report back on tuesday with marks.
