I don't understand how the school ranking affects your ATAR? My school is ranked sooooooo horrible! Probably 350-400 maybe even worst. How bad is this d:(

Well to be honest, it doesn't affect you at all, since that's last year's ranking, however it gives a good indication of how good your cohort is.

And rankings don't really mean anything, it's not like atar or anything, it's based on the number of band 6's. So an 88 or an 89 which is still an amazing mark, doesn't contribute to school rankings at all

However in saying that, you want your cohort to do as well as possible so your internal mark can be the best that they can be.
If you're ranked well though, then your cohort won't really affect you too much

How ever there is a strong link between your performance and your school you attend. For example in a school ranked 500 they may get a few distinguished achievement (band6) for the past years.whilst James ruse who is ranked 1 do very well. Say for example the general trend 3 unit mathematics 120-140 students on average receive a band six per year at Ruse. It may fluctuate from time to time but the trend is that they do well. So the general trend for your school is that they may get a few band 6 and hence it usually means that a few student in your grade will get a few band sixes. However THERE IS SO DIRECT RELATIONSHIP between the cohort last year and this year. In other words last year may not be very talented whereas in this year you guys could do potentially better than James Ruse. I the end just try your hardest don't stress
