Well from a girl's point of view I recommend:
- To ask her face to face, rather than over the phone etc, cos it shows that you have confidence
- Look her in the eyes and ask, don't like stare at her boobs or lips LOOL
and finally
- Be confident when asking her to the formal. Don't hesitate, but don't rush right into the question. Build up by saying "There's this formal at my school blah blah blah, and I was wondering if you like to be my partner etc etc.

You'll most likely get a YES, if:
1) Hasn't been asked to the formal by anyone else
2) Is really nice and a good friend of yours
3) If she's a girl LOOL, cos we understand that you guys get really nervous over this stuff and most of the time will say yes to anything cos we don't wanna break your small hearts LOOOL
