I logged onto WebCT an hour ago and I had access to the sites of the units I am doing this year. Some of the subjects still had notes, ilectures and bulletin boards discussing assignments and tests that they had in the same unit last year. What is your opinion on using this material to keep one step ahead. Is it an acurate measure of what the course will be like this year? Do you reccomend using these notes or reading set texts before university commences? I guess what I really want to know is, how to get a headstart, to be ahead of all the other people doing the same course as you. I'd also like to know your study methods or tips and tricks that you guys use to stay on top of things.

If I were you I'd definately download them (... if you're able to. They're always "up" but whether they're downloadable is another question altogether) but don't neccessarily assume that it'll keep you one step ahead. If anything, they may just confuse you mightily.

In regards to "Study tricks", I don't have any... I just go to the lectures, do the homework, contribute in tutes and try to put effort into the assessments :) I've never heard of anyone being "ahead" in class at Uni (this is such an HSC mentality!), however there are certainly people with a natural aptitude for learning particular subjects.

me too i've been at uni for two years already and i've known no one to be a head. Everyone i've spoken to you are always "shit i'm sooo behind, i don't know anything!"

I know this chick, lol she didn't know the difference between a debit and a credit (something we learnt in 1st week which is the basis for all the proceeding weeks) in accounting 4 days before the exam and she ended up getting a distinction.

my other friend took ages to understand financial statements etc she was saying she didn't get it etc and was thinking about getting a tutor coz she didn't understand anything at all throughout the semester....

yeah well she ended up with a HD ...

don't worry so much... the workload at uni is like 3 fold as much as the hsc packed into 3 and a bit months.... no one's going to be on top of things... just have a handle on things and try to keep up

Haha, downloading notes and lectures are all good, but if you don't understand the structure and the relevance, it kinda goes astray. And at times, the course could've been totally changed, so it may not be the best sign.

Just stay on top of studies during the semester.

One study trick I've started using is to have 2 books, 1 for taking down the notes and rough guide to lectures/tutorials, and another book for writing all up neatly and into headings etc. It helps to reinforce any material you've learnt, and I've found that spending time trying to format things has made it easier for me to remember things, but your mind may work differently, try and find your groove and just let it flow :)

Download them now before they get taken down.
As for being ahead, if you really want to be ahead you could read the text before the lecture. I don't think the issue is being ahead though, it's not falling behind because everyone seems to be behind. But I don't know, maybe the people who top subjects are in fact ahead and reading notes before the lectures.

Yeah. See, my advice would be - don't worry about being ahead, people get HDs without it. But I don't know what types of marks people who are ahead get. I would also say that to be 'ahead of the people in your course' all you have to do is keep up, that will give you a head start.

Study methods:
I think it is very important to have a comprehensive list of notes from the lecture that are neat and easy to study off. I do what asy does but I type my notes rather than write them so I don't have to worry about how neat they are.

It is also important to understand as much as you can during the lectures and tutes because you will never be able to teach yourself after the lectures and before exams.

My tip: read the chapter/section that'll be covered in the lecture. Anything you don't understand you should attend lecture since difficult points will be mentioned to clear up your problem. If you understand everything before the lecture it's pointless in going - use the time on more productive pursuits

Before you decide to read the book, check its the same one this year - same edition etc. or otherwise its a complete waste of time. Personally, I've started reading my property law text, but because its a new book, I'm just reading it from the beginning, but using the unit outline as a guide as to what aspects to concentrate on.

ilectures are good to listen to in the background while you're busy on BoS (or other top quality site), and just note the important details/concepts. A tip: save them and listen to them on winamp or similar so you can fast-forward and double the speed in case its boring!

In the end, I dont really do these things to get ahead, but it does prepare me on some level, because you know what to expect. Plus, as this is my third year, I finally get some psych electives which I'm really, really in love with, so I'm listening with interest.

I do know of people being ahead...a mate of mine would read 3/4 of the textbook before semester starts and subsequently get an HD. But those types are few and far between.
