For the upcoming trials - can anyone give me any tips on just how I should be reading my notes in order to remember them?

Read, cover, remember, repeat, check.

Or you can right it out alot and pretty much print it in your mind

You could record it and play it whilst you sleep.

I never tried it mainly owing to the fact I cbb doing it.

Yes, that's another issue too.

OP, you could try highlighting, mindmapping what you remember and teaching someone else your notes. There's plenty of ways to approach this.

I'm fairly sure that the listening while sleeping method has been disproved.

I remember someone talking about it, who said that the stuff they heard before falling asleep would help them remember, but nothing after they already were.
