I'm am currently in my HSC year but I'm pretty confident I can get the required ATAR to make it into the Commerce course at USYD.

However, I doubt I can get the 99.55 that is required for Commerce/Law.

My friend said I should do Commerce for a semester and try to transfer to Commerce/Law later on.

How would I go about doing this?

Would I need to average a distinction or higher? And how hard is that?

And does my ATAR still play a role in the transfer process even after spending a semester doing Commerce?

I think it's a year, not a semester (not too sure on this). ATAR does play a role in the transfer process. You'd need about a Distinction.

And just a note, cut off for Combined Law at USyd is 99.65.

Just a hint,
It is much harder to transfer into Law at USYD than it is as UNSW.
At UNSW, if your ATAR is above 97, you need a credit average in first year, and then you are SECURED a place into law.
However, at USYD, you are not secured a place and you have to get a solid distinction to transfer.

I've decided to pursue a different degree; a Bachelor in Political, Economic and Social Sciences.

Thanks for all the help though!
