For example, consider:

HD: 0 - 10% ---> 5%

What do you mean by 'scaling'?

You mean if you choose to do for example, Fundamental chemistry rather than Advanced chemistry as an elective, the fundamental chemistry will scale lower? lol

Yes, but advanced chemistry will be scaled higher rather than scaling fundamental chem lower.

This is normal when there are advanced/higher versions of subjects.

Scaling is essentially what they do with the numbers... from raw exam marks and other assessments. It's up to the person in charge of the unit to decide such matters.

At USyd, Adv science units have better scaling than the corresponding non-Adv units.

There is absolutely no difference between D or HD for your GPA. However, this is purely from an MQ viewpoint (for internal transfers and honours). If you chose to transfer externally, the *other* system is used.

Having said that I didn't work hard enough for HDs thinkin' that my GPA was *good enough*. But now that I'm thinkin' of post-grad elsewhere, I'm going to have to pick up my game.

btw, I'm not sure about CP = 1. It might be. Isn't really relevant, when it comes down to it.

I want to do post-grad, and overseas. MQ has a well respected School of Management program, but four years is enough there. But who knows...

The system discourages people from giving their all, as it's *perceived* to be a waste. So I don't like the system. No incentive to get HDs.

but i have been told there is no scaling? the only possible 'scaling' is that in harder courses a higher percentage will get HDs as opposed to lower courses having a lower percentage.

No, it's not the same.

A greater proportion of HDs and Ds is awarded to the advanced candidature.

Scaling is a bit discretional, and is entirely up to the indivdual lecturers in charge...I kno that for Accounting - that wasn't scaled in principle, but for economics, scaling I guess was determined on final exam performance
I remember my accounting lecturer in 1st semester saying "and for all the whingers out there, if u happen to get 49..I'll push your mark up to 50 coz I can't be bothered dealing with complaints"
