I'm not sure by what continuity refers to. Can someone please clarify.

Continuity deals with how continuous the ecosystem is, if it's broken up and spread over a wide area or if it's one large mass which is all joined together. For example, the Alpine ecosystem in Australia is fragmented (not continuous) as it is spread out in little bits across only the very tops of mountains. The Sahara Desert would be an example of a continuous Desert ecosystem, as it is not broken up by other ecosystem types.
