............................student A [came 1st in the subject] student B [top 15]
school marks............................ 94%..................................82%
hsc exams ................................80%................................. 90%

my friend said to me today that if the ^ happens then student A would be scalled up because she was ranked 1st at school and that student B wouldnt be scaled that high...is this true?

also my friend said that if anyone in the top 4 got close marks or higher in the hsc exam then the person that came 1st at school...then their marks stay the same but when other people that werent ranked as well get higher marks + beat the person who came 1st then the person 1st will still be scaled up ...is this true ?

i also heard that no matter what mark you get in your hsc your school marks never change...

and i wanted to know if this allowed...at my school my buisness teacher gave us these assignments and exams and some people went alright while others[me] didnt ... the head teacher said that shes going to change all our marks and make them lower because they were [according to her] to easy and our teacher was an easy marker...

i hope it made sense

Student A would keep their exam mark BUT their school assessed mark would become 90% - the highest exam mark earned by the school's cohort in the exam.

The same thing happens pretty much at the other end - the range of marks for the school's scaled assessments is the same as the range of marks for the school's scaled exam marks. The total marks earned in the exam are also the total marks that the school's scaled assessment marks will closely resemble - due to accident/misadventures and other contingencies things can change in some schools.

As I stated above the school's assessment marks are adjusted using the school's exam marks.

The reason for this is so that students across the state can be awarded assessment marks scaled to a common scale - i.e. the exam.

Teachers can change the marks BUT only if they leave the ranks and relative gaps the same.

If a teacher believes that a task was too easy or too hard then they can alter the marks to more accurately reflect the ability of the class but they can't change the ranks or gaps between the positions.

There is nothing wrong with the head teacher's actions so long as the ranks and relative gaps remain the same as those gained on the original marks.

Personally, due to the scaling process done based on the exam, I don't see the point in changing the assessment marks.

Last year my top student was given an assessment mark of either 88 or 89 - forget now but as they received 95 on the exam their final assessment mark was raised to 95.

The next five students also all went over 80 in their assessments with one or two marks between them.

Their final school based marks took most of them over 90 because their exam marks were that high.

The lowest mark was sent in at under 30 but was scaled to nearly 60 due to the student getting 58 or 59 (forget again) on the exam so that became their final mark as well.

Don't spend too much time worrying about scaling.

Concentrate on doing the best you can on the exam and you will get the reward you deserve.
