2001 HSC Question

I dont know what to do... this is from 2001 HSC paper

We know that 210=1024, so that 210 can be represented by a 4 digit numeral. How many digits are there in 21000 when written as a numeral?

also does anyone have the answers to the 2001 HSC papers...? im doing it but cant mark it

Re: 2001 HSC Question

Well, looking at the answers,
101 = 10 (2 digits)
102 = 100 (3 digits)
103 = 1000 (4 digits)

From i),
21000 = 10301.030 [if logax = y, then x = ay]
Therefore, from the pattern above, 21000 has 302 digits.

I've got them in my Success book, but my scanner isn't working.

Did you have any specific questions from the paper? Feel free to post them up.

If you're gonna get technical, she has the right to NOT be stalked :p

But hey, it's not my battle.

hey, i hav an interesting question. I tried to work this question out using AP series, and the answer i got is 301. tell me where did i go wrong.

2^10 ----> 4 digits
2^20-----> 7 digits
2^30-----> 10 digits

ie term1=4 , and common difference is 3

it seems to work for 2^30 ie n=3. so 4+(3-1)*3=10 digits

but for 2^1000, n=100
ie 4+(100-1)*3=301???
:confused:

i dont think its right to solve this using AP series,

by using soulsearcher's method

2^970 --> 10^291.99 = 292 digits
2^980 --> 10^295.01 = 296 digits

the common difference shifts to 4 at that point. since the common difference changes, the series is not arithmetic.
