they are kind of expensive though for what you get, and the real cost of operating the car will be seen in the next couple of years. They are alright for city driving and not much else, and as topgear showed depending on how you drive it a bmw m3 could bee more fuel efficient.

Don't get hybrids, they are intermediate solutions. Plus prius looks like a clown-mobile.

Get LPG. I've got an LPG and a Petrol car, I'd recommend LPG.. runs very smooth too.

There are also Euro diesels that are very good if you can afford them.

To me though, the thing which really amazes me about hybrid cars is that once you have made the initial fixed cost investment, the variable costs of consumption/driving the car whether it be a short trip to the shops or a long drive around the city, or dropping mates off after a party, etc.... the additional cost to the environment or petrol costs are minimal relative to other cars.
Why not a Euro diesel like the Golf or Polo TDI? Much lower initial cost of investment, high efficiency and doesn't make you look like a douche on the road.
