Due to my shit UAI, I chose the only (I thought) reasonable degree - Science/Arts. And at the moment I AM HATING IT! The Science is a repeat of year 12 and the only thing I like is Japanese.

I was thinking of doing a mid-year transfer into arts, but naturally my parents would skitz and go "Arts? What the hell will you do with that?"

Is an Arts degree as useless as they say?

I have a really keen interest in Languages, and I was wondering if there was a viable career in Languages, besides interpreting. I was thinking about becoming a Vietnamese interpreter but there's a lot of them already.

Also, I'm interested in Law but I dont wanna become a practising solicitor. Are there any other legal related option (possibly one incorporating an Arts degree)?

well science does get more interesting...

but if you didn't like high school science you will prolly struggle in uni.

"Arts? What the hell will you do with that?"

lol, typical...

but if you think about it, all politicians did some kind of arts degree.
I'm not sure about a straight language degree...
It depends on how interested you are

Nancy, stick with it a little longer. Remember that all the stuff they're doing now (year 12 science) is just what they HAVE to do to get you onto the good shit. Not everyone did Physics, or Chem, who need it for their degree. Even from those who did, many either sucked then or suck now because they forgot it all. Trust me, be patient and the science will get better. :)

1) yea theres an arts (languages) course at USYD but thats like 98+ if i remembered correctly

2) arts is good if ur looking for a general career..if u wanna be a specialised person, (accountant?) then arts isnt the course to do it in. *from the words of an arts graduate*- she is now a consultant at her uni for study abroad schemes

3) try arts/law uais ranged from 91.00 to 99.6 (in the syd area)

Im pretty sure a paralegal gives advice to people on legal issues, and your rights and everything but wont represent you or anything like that.

paralegals do most of the research and stuff involved with a case and don't get paid half as much as the lawyers who take all the credit for thier work.

If you want to do something with languages transfer into an Arts (languages) or arts (translation) course. Plain arts is pretty useless unless you do something like linguistics or languages.

Arts is also hella boring.

But arts (languages) is legit and a good course, you could do it and end up as a translator or interpreter.

i think its too early to start hating ya degree, give it a bit more time and then re assess ya situation....and yes, art degree does sound useless (and most ppl. will tell u that)...but i guess u can always do teaching and stuff afterwards if u don't find a job.:p

It is your degree, not your mum or dad's.

What science units are you taking? Changing to another 'stream' may improve the degree combination to a certain extent, I guess.

i agree to this as well. i thought you wanted to transfer? well use this year as a getting HD's year and then transfer into another course like pharmacy (as you wanted). dont first year science degrees start out with basic year 12 stuff anyway?

nancy!!

interested in law but dont want to practice ??

i dont think you can do that with law, in that its so full on that you probably dont want to have it as a mere side project :)

im doing arts atm, it seems pretty useless, but it allows for transfer into BA LLB for me plus i get to do all the subjects ive wanted to now, ie Japanese, Ancient His, and Philosophy, so no i dont think its useless it serves its purpose as a general degree.

On the contrary, many people come out with law degrees as a mode of reference adjunct to their other, primary degree (like doctors).

nancy, B Science is more of a generalist degree, next year you focus more on something else you like.

e.g. for me I was planning to do B Computer Science, however even though I made the UAI requirements for it, I picked B Science instead.

This is because I am very unsure whether I'd like Computer Science, or whether it's too hard for me. In either case, by doing B Science, I still picked all the subject's pre-requisites for Computer Science to move onto the second year straight away if I decided I like that course, so B Science is a good way to doing it, because if I hated computer science it would be easier t get out of it.

Chem1011 [basics] , Bios1201 [cell biology] and Math1031 [maths for life sciences] ... I hate them all, I thought uni would be different but it's like the HSC again, crammed into 6 months

are YOU MAD? u wanna be a solicitor !!!

your also thinking a bit early about careers...

session aint even done yet stop planning and enjoy the fact that science is easy
i did workies in yr 10 at a solicitor and i hated what he had to do. i find secretarial work fun for some reason though

and hey, at the rate we're churning out lawyers, they'll need secretaries and paralegals eventually!

do you think its possible i could learn like 10 languages and become a uber-translator or something? cos i'd like that, i like languages a lot

i was gonna do linguistics as part of my arts degree but i had a CP limit :( and my science units are recommended for the sci majors i was considering

Yeah, you just need a business diploma or secerterial qualifications.

It is poor pay about 5 years experience top pay is about $55k average is around $45k but relaxing and easy job.

Some Recruitment Consultant have said those who aren't going to Uni, Office Junior job is the best job to get because it provides very good entry path to other jobs.
