Hi, first post on these forums!

A little background information on myself;

I am 20, left school in year 10 and now would really like to go and get a UAI so I can go to uni. I am really interested in doing a science degree, something where I can specialise in working with the environment and be outdoors a bit.

I have been just doing general work such as labouring and retail and customer service.

I am seriously considering enrolling in TAFE next year, in fact I am 90% sure I will.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction for what might interest me? Maybe conservation biology?

What sort of subjects should I choose to undertake next year and what UAI would I need to get involved in such an area?

I've finally decided what direction I'd like my life to take, and I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Thanks!

Have you considered environmental engineering? Suits above and there are jobs.

UNSW course:

This is a full enviro program (not a Civil one with an elective or two like some unis).

It has a lot more content with respect to water than other unis (which probably concentrate more on the chemistry side of things c.f. UNSW). Really depends on your interests.

You should definitely check out the HSC course at TAFE, that's where I did mine. Also, you can apply for a limited UAI, which is where people 20 and over can get a UAI with only 5-9 units including 2 units of english.

Check this out (look for Limited UAI)
http://www.uac.edu.au/admin/uaitext.html#limited

If you go to TAFE I'd ask the HSC coordinator about the limited UAI.

Hope this helps.:)

Thanks alot for the replies!

You have all been a great help.

I have to go to a compulsary information session at the TAFE next month to learn all about it, so I can ask the questions there.

My main problem is this though;

I don't want a job, I want a career, and I want a career that will pay half decent and one that I will enjoy.

I wouldn't do engineering, as even though I am good at maths, it makes me cry. I'd like something where I can use the part of my brain that involves creativity and such, but also something where I won't get bored with it after a year. I'd really like something where I get to work outside and with nature, but not something that has extremely limited career options.

I'd say do something that can open out to a number of different paths of your interest. It's better to be doing or learning something while you work out or find what your looking for than wasting time just worring about not knowing what to do.
I'm still not sure want i want to do, but doing my HSC was the best. I was never going to do it, because I didn't feel like I could, but doing it gave me time to work out what direction I wanted to head into.

Yeah I know what you mean. I need to find some purpose and direction with my life. I'd also not mind doing a job where you get to help people like psychologist or something, but it seems too confining.

I've had a hard life, grew up rough and I just want to show other young people who have had it similar that they don't have to go down the dark path.

So yeah nature or helping people, I even have considered primary school teacher but I know that would kill me after a few years with the lack of stimulation.

I've got time to decide I guess whilst I'm going for that HSC, but I'd like to choose subjects which will help me get in to the course of my dreams, if I ever decide what that is.

Always think of it this way:
It is NEVER too late.

Hope you find what your looking for.

Science degrees are really really flexible so you can make up your mind when you get there. You've got ages to decide

You may like to do something with agriculture? These are just off the top of my head but

marine biologists
zoologists
working for a magazine such as science today
forestry
teaching
training animals
sports science
veterinary science

etc.

There are many opportunities out there, you may even discover you want to be a doctor or something like that, you don't have to decide now.
