Hey,

Im in the UTS U@UNI program and I honestly want to leave. It sounds like a great program, but I feel like its not for me. Its a non-atar pathway, so its really meant for individuals that aren't at the top of their classes. Im honestly surprised my school allowed me to enroll in the program, as previously the HSIE head teacher told me that the school doesn't want me to get an early offer (apparently cause ill get lazy, and not try in the hsc).

Anyways there is a program coming up, and I really dont want to attend. I already am not meeting the minimum attendance requirements, so I have to go. If I do go im gonna miss a bunch of double periods, and also one of the programs is in the holidays. I really dont mind this for now, but when year 12 comes around I really cannot afford to miss any classes.

UTS isnt my first preference of universities, and I am aiming to go to UNSW, for engineering. Im already in a gateway program for UNSW, so I really dont need to be in the UTS U@UNI program. So, what are your thoughts? Should I stay in the program despite me not wanting to go UTS, or should I leave, and focus in going to uni through an atar pathway, and a potential scholarship?

tl;dr should I stay in the UTS non-atar pathway program, despite me wanting to go to UNSW and get a scholarship?

I'm not too familiar with the UTS U@Uni program, but I think there are a few things you may want to consider:
  • Experience - from what I saw, they have focus workshops for the different pathways you may be interested in. Might help with what you would like to specialise in for engineering.
  • Are there any penalties (from school or UTS) if you don't complete the program?

Im pretty set on doing electrical engineering, and from the times I have been to the UTS campus, they really dont talk much about that side of engineering, and really only talk about computer or civil engineering. There also isnt a penalty for leaving the program. I honestly think my deputy principal will be disappointed and happy at the same time - happy cause I will focus more on my HSC and getting a high atar, and disappointed cause it is a good program (I just dont think the program is fit for me).

Ill talk to my careers advisor and or deputy principal, and see what they think.

Thanks for the help!

Can you give a run down of what the UTS program is? Is it like a co-op kind of thing? Honestly if you’re set on going to UNSW then you could drop the program. Still not too sure what this program is though…

Basically its a program that 'tries to prepare you for uni'. You go to their campus 15ish times, and join some programs from the faculties. There was a 5 day holiday program last term, where you chose a faculty, and you would be in the same room for 8 hours at a time, and would do this 'mini' project. You would then showcase this project on the last day, e.g. some people made games, others made websites, some designed shirts.... Some of the times UTS reps would come to your school for an hour and basically just have a chat with you - it wasnt very uni related they just kinda asked everyone what their long and short term goals were.

Now that im writing this, I really dont know myself what this program is about. In reality it doesnt prepare me for uni at all, and just kinda makes me lose out on classes. Though UTS is my second choice of unis, but I am aiming to get a schoalrship, so a non-atar entry is probably not for me.
