I am probably a major idiot for doing this, but these holidays I have so far spent 31 hours trying to catch up on all the chemistry content that my school has learnt.

Let me explain:

In term 2 of this year, I kind of had a crisis and realised I should of done chemistry as I tbh really like it and am decently good at it. It also would serve me great after school for my studies as I am considering studying something in that area.

At the start of term 2 I kept switching my mind on whether I should change (mainly due to me thinking of catching up)- lol If I knew how much work it really was I definitely switched then and there.
After ages of seriously contemplating my choice I finally came to a decision that I wanted to switch to Chemistry from my Earth and Environmental class around mid- end of term 2.
The thing is my teacher didn't let me switch..
Tbh this made me pretty depressed and the thought never really left my mind.
So, I decided I would set up a plan for the holidays where I do 5 hours a day for 2 weeks on Chemistry to get 70 hours of work caught up on.
The thing is, this plan failed pretty miserably.
After different events, my schedule crumbled, meaning I only have managed to do 31 hours so far.
At this rate I am questioning what I am seriously doing. Is all this hard work even worth
it?
Chemistry has taken most my time, although I have generally done most of my work for all my other subjects that mainly needed to be done for the holidays. Occasionally I wonder if I am an idiot for doing this, all those hours spent on this dumb catchup could of been spent elsewhere, enjoying myself, and getting ahead in my other subjects.
This catchup probably has also had a bit of a negative affect on my mental health, making me stressed and annoyed for why i didn't pick the subject in the first place.

So my main question is- Should I just quit the catchup, is it worth my time doing it.
- Look I know I would enjoy Chemistry a lot, but i don't know if it is worth me doing this. Im gonna have grind to get the work done and the Chemistry assessment is on week 1 Friday so I will also have to grind questions in week 1 of Term 3.

My other question is: Do you guys know if there would be any chance I got drop my Modern class and my teachers would let me self study Chemistry and sit the assessment to see how I go. I have got good marks in Earth (it is pretty easy) and i somewhat enjoy it, so foerfitting this would be a gamble.

If you weren't allowed to switch then why are you doing this? I don't know if you can take Chem in year 12 if you didn't in year 11 (prolly can) but why?
I don't even think they would let you randomly drop subjects at your own leisure??

I’m in year 11 right now, tbh i don’t really know why, but i thought it was worth a try

no offence but this is really a dumb move. they rejected this choice before, when it was a BETTER time than now, what makes you think they’ll let you switch now? but you know what, instead of wasting your time with no assurance that there’s any point, EMAIL whatever teacher you need to email about it and tell them about all the work you’ve put in and try to convince them. even call/text them if they’ve given that point of contact for the holidays. for now? work on the subjects you’re actually doing. you can’t just allocate 31 hours of (seemingly) useless work when that could go to subjects that will benefit you for certain.

you really just need to email your deputy / head of year 11 / head of science and ask them, ultimately they are the ones who will decide if you can switch. nesa has some requirements about switching subjects that you might not be able to fulfil anymore, your deputy will know these best.

it’s probably best to stop until you get a response, because otherwise your other subjects are gonna suffer and then you’ll probably end up more stressed. worst comes to worst you can take a unit of chemistry in university, first year subjects will cover all of hsc chem anyway

tbh, idk, I think i might just give it up. It was worth a try but i think it’s too much work.

The good thing is I have managed to do majority of the work for my other subjects this holiday. I got ahead three exercises in math, did my economics notes and most of my physics notes. Just need to work on physics a bit more. In hindsight it was probably a bad idea doing this but oh well, it was a learning experience, the past can’t be changed.

If you guys have any other thoughts, please let me know. I mean i could contact my teachers, but the thing is there is a chemistry assessment first week back that would be hard for me to do good in.
But idk.
Any advice is welcomed.

i think u should email ur head teacher for science, and ur year advisor to see if u can switch. if u can switch, then switch. for now, u should prob just stop working on it bcuz i doubt they would let you, make sure u mention you have done notes to the teachers u speak to. if u do get into chem, u may risk an n award if u arent able to finish the assessment, but youre able to resolve n awards.

man why did i do this
kinda sucks that u did this for a subject you likely wont do. but i just want to say that 5 hours a day during holidays in year 11 is actually quite impressive and that this type of stuff prepares you a lot for hsc, hell im in year 12 and the majority of my classmates arent studying at all before trials. based on this i think you will do really well for hsc if u keep up w this :), good job!

also chemistry helps in earth. not too much, but some topics in earth are related to chem so having the basics under your belt helps out. i remember our earth class had to do a recap on yr10 chem lol
