A small rabbit hole....
.....by my dad.

We got a router for our net a while ago...except now my dad has taken too many pills and the admin powers over the router have gone to his head. So far his banned the following words from addresses which means if any address has ANY of the following words in it it automatically gets block...here they are:

Sex ( and other similar type words, i don't mind about that)
Picture ( WTF!?!??!)
Gun
Baby
Girl
Game

Now the only way i can see around it, and the thing i do when im desperate, is to just disconnect myself from the router and directly plug it into the cable modem but it is a tiring and annoying proccess. Other options, which are not easily doable include :

-Finding out his password (not possible to unban words considering he gets logs of the addresses accessed by everyone through the router...not sure if he reads it but)
- Reset the router. (Slightly obvious)
- Find some backdoor program so i can change the settings.

Well thats about it. But the most annoying thing is that he blocked the Ftp ports as well which means to update my site I have to use http ftp...if that makes sense. For example http://www.01ftp.com and with major updates its a pain in the ass as well. I'm pretty sure his blocked SMTP as well so again, for my site, instead of being able to use outlook like any normal person i have to use crappy http with crappy interface.

I'm screwed aren't I? -_-'

BTW my router is a Netgear Cable/DSL wireless router with 4 port 10/100 Mbps swith MR814b

Yes you are, How obvious would it be if you reset the router? Could it be blamed on a brownout? Power surge?

Could you get to the sites by using their IP address rather than the hostname? Or use a transperant proxy?

IP address works but then when you clink on any link it ussually refers to a link with the address in it anywho...and what's a transparent proxy O_O.....

You should explain that things like SMTP are essential.

Yeah i agree, your dad has gone overboard, tell him that this shit is necessary.

ie, a research assessment on breast cancer and the effects of AIDS on human society.

Or take to him with an axe. either way works

Oh yeh breast is banned too -_-'

The thing is, my dad = viet. Dad in viet household = all powerful god.

I've told my dad many a times that SMTP is essential and so is FTP but he always goes on about how I should study and all that...i mean how am I suppose to study if im restricted from doing the things that i need to and waste about 50 bazillion more hours on the things i need to do when i could do them in like 1 minute without the restrictions?? ><

EDIT: Oh and my dad is a retired network administrator of 30 years so I can't trick him with any technical crap -_-"

Try to change firmware - its should stuff up the configs ? :>

Or convince him to update the firmware (Found on manufacturers website)

Updating the firmware on the MR814 needs you to login to the router's web interface, which he doesn't have the password to. Even if it is updated, I'm sure his dad is smart enough to have backed up the settings beforehand and restored in as explained in the firmware upgrade readme.
