hi guys

u know i wanted to change the world ( yes im still naieve! :p )
i thought of joining the military law corps, UN, WHO and all the other well known big organizations (other than the volunteer ones like greenpeace)

but i spoke to a former law graduate now businessman about this stuff and he told me to really think about what im planning to do because the truth is that its hard to change the world as an individual.

so id like ur thoughts on this:
if im in the military,(law officer) i can only act on the orders of the aust gov. but if im very high up: cant i decide how Australias policies are carried out?

he also saidsomething like this: theoretically there's no such thing as international law because it depends on what laws each country decides to follow (mor or less..) . no one cares about international law, because only america decides what goes on around the world.

--------------------------
basically ill need to do more research, i dont really know what else there is for me besides research (science)

he said a law degree serves as a good foundation especially when combined with like commerce, that i agree.

hmmmm, id appreciate any comments :)

what do u want to change abt the world?

edit: when it comes to decisions the US make, the UN can't do anything to stop them and its america whos causing all the trouble so if the UN cant control them then the UN is good 4 nothing.

Well, if the country has acknowledged and are part of the agreed law then other countries can still sanction the offending state...that's where it's up to international law specialists to decide whether they have done any wrong or not...

When it comes to massive countries like US and China...international law dosen't exist IMO...:p

That no-one cares about international law per se is not true at all - and is highly cynical. International law is a very diverse field - commercial transactions for instance, in the international sphere, are obviously important. If you're talking about the law of conflicts, then that may be more related to the man's statement. Also international law is having a slow but increasing influence on the Australian judiciary (somewhat to the credit of progressive thinkers like Kirby).

It's good you want to change the world, but 'military officer' isn't the way to go about it... have you ever considered politics? Basically the law-makers are the one's who push Australia's policies in different directions (in an ideal world, via the people). I too wanted to do something which is important and that contributes to the social order -- law is the backbone of society and I think resolving conflicts is an integral element of civilization (one day I would like to become a judge -- just as one day you may want to be a high-ranking diplomat or some such thing).

I would also note that DFAT doesn't pay all that well :p

really helpfu guys :)

maybe changing the world isnt for me, maybe i should be a school teacher and make all my 300 students wanna change the world :) that would be much easier!!

santa slayer- ur right, if i get into international law (enforcement) i can only bully smaller countries and not the big fat crime makers.

jou jou, ur right too, UN cant do much, it depends on every country willing to cooperate with the org to create peace, but just as the former league of nations failed to stop WW2, UN is similarly placed at the whims of arrogant nations. But i can see some niche roles i can play there, so i havent scraped that idea....

Moonlight sonata:
Dfat would be a good job, but again all u do is ensure everyone luvs australia, even in the senior ranks too ! (no policy making there :( )

that businessman told me about politics too, but one man cant do much in politics, thats why we formed parties, so i dunno, i come from an area of NSW where labour is in control, lots of labour candidates put their hands up but only one gets selected, isnt that too competitive for me?

oh well, theres always science! (stuff this world- go for the next one :) lolz )
laterz :)
