im guessing that it isnt necessary for us to know the ieee 754 standard right? just checking.

btw, sam davis, if you're listening...HOW DO U EXPECT US TO DO Q14SET 10B???

you dont provide any method at all with regards to conversion into the standard and it IS NOT self explanatory.

thanks fatmuscle...your notes on the first half of the topic are excellent, especially with regards to conversion of decimals (ie 0.00xx..) and recursive decimals into binary (and hence conversion to IEEE 754 standard)

I remember the Excel study guide was good at explaining the IEEE conversion, give that a little look as well.

i did have a look and its not nearly as good as fatmuscles notes. the main problem is step 1: converting the decimal into a binary number. basically, the excel (and many other resources just say do it, e.g. 418.125=110100010.001

when this original number becomes more complex, for example, 0.00015, it becomes more difficult. this is where fatmuscles notes are really good, especially since the method can be easily achieved without the use of a calculator. try converting 0.00015 to binary urself, ull find its not easy [comes out to be 0.0000000000001001110101....] (this is Q14SET 10B from sam davis' book)
