If you are doing 11 units, and you do excellent in the 1 unit subject (eg, ext english), and terribly in a 2 unit subject (eg, chemistry), will only half of the atar of "chemistry" count towards your ATAR or is that impossible?

Assuming your other 8 units are counted, 1 unit of Ext English and 1 unit of Chemistry will contribute to the 10 units used to calculate your ATAR.

Yes. If a two unit subject is your worst with 11 units, they take half of it. i.e. It becomes a mark out of 50.
