I just got back from my 2 weeks on schoolies: First week Gold Coast second at Byron.
Gold Coast
I went Surfers in Queensland's official schoolies week with 4 mates. I didn't actually know that it was Queensland's week and not NSW's until I got up there, but it turned out to be better.
We stayed in the Outrigger Sun City Resort, which is a pretty dope high rise hotel, depending on which website you look at it is rated either 4.5 stars or 5 stars. Only problem was that in the lifts, your card only gave you access to your level, so if you wanted to go to someone you had mates level, you had to meet them in the foyer and go up together.
Every night there were free music and other events on the beach, a band on from 8 - 10, and DJ's from 10 - 2.
Me and my mates spent most our nights on the beach as there were two stages and always something on.
During the day there are heaps of chill out tents and other free shit to do on the beach, eg. organised volleyball, soccer etc with all the equipment provided, free surf lessons, free dj lessons etc etc.
Basically, my days would consist of waking up around 11, having breakfast, watching channel V for an hour and chilling with mates, waiting for all to wake up.
When all were awake, we head to the beach.
Chill near the dare coffee tent on beanbags and watch dancers and drink free dare coffee shots.
Maybe go for swim.
Get free sausage sizzle lunch.
Go shopping for food, drink and other shit.
Talk with random people.
Go home at about 6.
Start drinking beer while preparing dinner.
Dinner at 7.
Go for a swim in hotel pool.
Go back to apartment and drink more beer.
At 9:30 move on the the harder grog - Drink to get pissed
10:15 head down to beach, as the DJ starts at 10.
Dance with many different hotties until the DJ finishes at 2.
Either head home, head home with lady, or chill on the beach and watch the late night movies they show.
Basically, it was a mad time.
The ladies were hot and there were lots of them, everyone was so incredibly nice, apart from the people working in fast food stores and one particular horse policeman, and the beaches were beautiful.
In the end we were lucky that we went on the official qld week, because they don't have the organized beach parties (eg. stage, djs etc) on the NSW week.
We didn't see any of the fights or any of that shit while we were down there, and we stayed right in the middle of Surfers.
Byron Bay
Byron was totally different to the GC.
Before I left, people would always say "Gold Coast is better if you are over 18 and Byron is better is you are under 18".
This is totally false.
Personally, I am over 18, but a couple of my mates were under 18.
The problem with Byron was that there was no officially organised events, entertainment or anything otherwise.
In the Gold Coast, other than buying grog, i really did not find the need to exercise my rights as an adult, but in byron, unless you know of a party, if you are under 18 you are stuck sitting on the beach with a few others that are not clubbing or the like.
I was fortunate enough to have a party to go to every night, and that my mates fakies worked in Cheeky Monkeys (a club unlike any Sydney club, a must to check out). So i still had an awesome time other than a bad case of sun burn to the torso.
So if you are planning on going to Byron, either make sure that you and all your friends will be 18 by then, or make sure there are others you know going, so as to have an "in" for all the parties.
Highlights
- First day in Gold Coast, we hired out scooters and basically mad the streets of surfers our playground. My mate ended up crashing and having to pay $600. Fortunately he is rich, as his dad didn't seem to care. Damn rich people, i would have been screwed.
- Beach parties in GC. So much fun getting front row, dancing your arse off with one of the many many sexy women to Kayne's "Golddigger", getting soaking wet from the water people to cool you down.
- Meeting people I know, but didn't know were gonna be there in Byron.
- Women.
Hope you guys have/had/are having as good a time as I did.
