Agreed. I don't see why anybody would bother with trying to determine if they should use multiplication by a or a^2 when a^2 always works and is generally also faster and easier (at the very least equivalent, unless you're really horrible at polynomials).

Conclusion: Just multiply by the square of the denom. Don't faff around testing cases or trying to figure out if something is negative.
