Use a plumb bob, one in a bus and one in your room. Observe that the plumb bob in the non-inertial frame of reference(i.e. an accelerating bus) will not stay vertical (it will tilt backwards)

I stood on a scale in an elevator so I could see when I experienced a force (i.e. an acceleration).

You always experience a force, weight, due to gravity. I think you mean 'when I experience a greater reaction force.'
