Intellectual Property: Opinions? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I am thinking about doing IP Law next semester.

I was wondering if anyone who has done it/ or knows anyone who has done it, could possibly answer a few questions.

(1) Is it difficult in terms of understanding the context?
(2) Is it time consuming?
(3) Is the assessment difficult? What is the assessment?

I just saw this thread.

Maka... all I can say is stay away. The convenor is... well, she randomly decides not to turn up to tutes and doesnt tell anyone, flies off the handle, and is generally vauge. After comparing notes with others who did the unit with the old convenor, it seems that the current woman is doing little right.

Ahem. Anways, just my opinion. Here are my answers to your questions

1. IP is extremely easy to follow. It all makes sense. Some parts get complex, and unfortunately the convenor doesnt do much to help that, because she specialises in copyright only and thus is as lost as the students when it comes to patents and trademarks.

2. There is a lot of reading set, but there is a great crib book around.. its basically a step-by-step guide on how to answer problem questions. Get that rather than the assigned text. Just listen to the lectures and that will get you through.

2. The first assessment is a free-choice essay (or you can pick from a list of three or so topics that she makes up). The final exam is a problem question and essay, and you're given exactly 48 hours to do it in. So that was pretty stressful. If I didn't have that crib book, there is no way I would've been able to answer the PQ.

Overall, I found the content really, really interesting, but the unit convenor just doesnt do it justice.

But this is all just my opinion. IWR and Scarecrow also did it; maybe they'd like to contribute?

Thanks for the overview. Many people have said to me a similiar thing. Great content but yeah they didnt really love the way it was taught.

So I am thinking I may only do this if I am really struggling to fill electives which is a big possibility.

I wanted to do an elective at UTS called Insolvency next semester but I was told it is only a 3cp subject leaving 1cp left over for who knows what. Imagine having 1cp to do and having to pick up an extra unit. Would have done Sports Law too at UTS.

Well, I have to say maka that you have great taste in electives! I too wanted to do insolvency but, like you, decided against it because it only equated to 3cp (which I think is stupid; I think they should look at the fact that its a final year elective at UTS and therefore we should get our 4cp for it). Major major disappointment.

There is a 2cp research unit designed for people who get stuck with 1cp. But that would be a pain.

But it would be too hard to have some common sense wouldnt it? I think if they arent going to provide good law electives that go beyond a few specialist areas of jurisprudence, corporate law and international law, they should be telling students that any law elective at another uni that would be equal in workload to a MQ law elective would amount to credit.

They seriously need to do a survey and ask people what sort of electives they would prefer. Imagine Sports Law as an example.... I am certain you could get 50+ people to do it. Why not a subject where students do practical experience and dont have weekly classes but need to submit something based on their experiences.

I just dont get why the range is so limited. I know you focus upon the interests and ability of the staff but if you do that you shouldnt stop people going to another uni to follow their interests due to a technicality that 6cp is the equivalent to 3cp.

I cant remember the name, but Susanne gives you it in the study guide... and last year she made the avaliable from coop. I think it was nearly as much as the text, so I'd honestly buy the crib book over the text. Just listen to the iLectures and keep up-to-date with the multimedia she provides you with, and you'll be fine
