is anyone doing this course here, and what does it entail and what sort of careers can u gain from it?
Do u get to study a language of your choice or what, i am a little vague as to how double law degrees work!

I assume you're talking about a combined Law/International Studies degree?

Law/International Studies is a new combination that was just introduced this year, so you won't find anyone who has actually started this degree as yet.

Studying a combined law degree is like studying two individual degrees simultaneously. You do your law subjects just like other law students and your IntS subjects just like other IntS students. You're not specialising in International legal studies, you're just doing the two separate degrees at the one time.

Career options of this combined degree would include the career options for those of a law degree plus the career options for those studying IntS alone. Just remember that International studies/Law doesn't limit you to studying international law only. You're just doing both degrees at the same time and you can persue any area of study in law outside of international studies.

thanks so much that makes it a lot clearer! sounds like a good combination to get, although the uai is about 99.55!! :O i think i read that they may accept you if u finish one year of university really well, so do u think it wud be a good idea to start international studies in the first year (uai 93) and then try to get into law after a year if i dont get the uai?

Any one opinion is inadequate unless he or she has studied all three/four courses, which is near impossible, so I can't really speak for the other unis. Your question is really just another variant of the 'which is the best uni for law' with the added twist of 'international studies', so best to do a search for previous threads and posts on the 'best uni for law' debate. With regards to Law, Sydney Uni is the generally considered the most prestigious, and 'it is advisable to seek placement in this course first' (I've taken this straight from the guide in the General/Law forum). Of course, prestigious doesn't necessarily mean 'best' (I'm trying to be P.C here), and each course has its own weaknesses and strengths, whether it be teaching methods, lack of practical legal training or subject depth and range. Haven't done Law at any institution (yet), so I'm not at liberty to go further in depth.

As for International Studies, it is still in its infancy at Sydney Uni (this is only the second year it's being run, and the first it can be combined with Law). As with any new course, it wasn't and isn't without its problems. Last year the main problem was apparently the lack of direction and workloads disproportionate to the amount of time had to teach the course (according to the SRC Course handbook). Also, if you're a right-wing fascist who loathes "leftish bullshit" and/or politics, you might struggle with Int. Studies since Political Economy and Government are compulsory units. I personally didn't do International Studies so I wouldn't have to sit through Geopolitics, which I heard was, and came to knew as complete shit. I chose Economic (Social Sciences) instead because its course structure was easier to understand at the time, there aren't any specific core units (except minor/major requirements) and Frank Stilwell was a 'flag flyer' for Econ. Soc. Sci. Only downside (if it really is one) is that I can't do the two practical Int. Studies units.

You'll be able to talk to students from all the Universities there.

I personally don't do Law, but I will advise you that the University of Sydney's Bachelor of International Studies program was only introduced last year (2005) and thus, they are still running a kind of trial and error thing there. UNSW has a far better established International Studies program.

Having said that, Sydney has been reknowned for its Law School for ages and I can personally say that the Government Department (where you'll be doing your International components) is fantastic and I'm really enjoying it.

Something constructive - just came to mind that Macquarie's Int. Studies course was just established this year, so that's probably going through teeting problems too on that premise... (and so yeah, what ujuphleg said)
