International recognition for University's first-year experience program

A program designed by the University of Newcastle to help first-year students settle into university life has been recognised internationally as an example of best practice.

Uni-Start is a two-day orientation program facilitated by student mentors who deliver a student perspective on university life, including tips on essay writing and time management skills, the expectations and realities of university study and avenues for support.

A paper written by Assistant Deputy Academic Registrar (Student Support Services) Ms Sarah O'Shea on the success of the innovative program will form a chapter of the publication International Perspectives on the First Year Experience. The book is due for release in mid-2009 and will be promoted at international first-year experience conferences.

Uni-Start was first trialled at the University of Newcastle's Central Coast campus in 2006. It is currently in a staged roll out to students on the Newcastle campus (at Callaghan).

Woo! Fuck yeah. Along with 8 others and Kym Cowley, I helped designed this program.

Good to see its been recognised, cos it took a fair effort. :)

Yes, it was definately gay seeing heaps of people walking around in those blue mentor shirts. Gayer than aids. But I guess if they take pride from doing that, then good on them.

What I was involved in wasnt gay though, I had a few meetings with other guys in the team and the PVC for the Bus/Law Faculty and other faculty staff on the direction of the program, and what we were doing, funding etc, interesting stats on why they wanted a program ect ect.

Its just interesting as to why somebody has taken it as an example of "best practice" yada yada, and its going in some book. Why lah?

Surely other uni's (USYD, UNSW ect) have more well established first year programs in place?
