Hi, I'm in year 12 and I'm seriously considering ANU for next year. "bachelor of arts (international relations)" looks like a good course but I was wondering if this course can be combined with law.

I've looked at the list of combined law courses and "arts/law" is one of them. Now, international relations is an arts degree, so can I do "arts (international relations)/law"?

If anyone could answer this it would be much apreciated.

Unfortunately you can't combine law and international relations at the ANU, probably because much like say liberal studies at the University of Sydney it's a broad ranging course which is meant to give you experience in quite a few disciplines, and you aren't going to get that experience in a combined degree (since you'd be doing two IR courses instead of four).

Not all hope is lost though since you can still do many of the courses that are offered in international relations if you do arts/law (histories, politics, anthropology, european languages etc) you'll just graduate with a straight arts degree.

Also, I'm positive that you can take up programs from other faculties as well (i.e. from the asian studies faculty) like in the IR degree, though I think that the arts people should really answer you there.

If you have any more questions ask, the law degree at ANU is excellent and while I'm not particularly thrilled with my asian studies degree, the guys who are doing arts love it. :p

thanks neo o. And thanks for explaining it.
I wanted to do the combined degree as well, I was sooo pissed when my careers adviser told me I couldn't, seeing how it doesn't exist. what neo said - do arts, you can do Int Rel as a major though it's almost exactly the same as the Pol Sci one. Law is not as 'prestigious' as USYD or UNSW, however you get more individual attention cos of the smaller class sizes. Also ANU doesn't take feepaying law people, unlike the Sydney unis (I think.) I'll see you there next year, unless the UAI calculating people make a mistake in my advantage. :)

I'm actually doing that-Arts/Law with a major in IR and French. So it's almost the equivalent of doing a combined arts (IR)/law degree. The reason you can't combine is because it's a specialist degree. but you should note that the IR major is a bit different to the politics major in terms of what compulsory courses you have to do throughout it. eg Politics major, you have to just do any 2 first year politics courses. IR, you have to specifically the 'Intro to Int. Relations' course from the Politics school.

Anyways, i'm really enjoying it-both the law courses (although foundations lectures are very boring) and the politics and French. But i might revise this opinion after i get my mid-semester assessments back!

There's an overview. ^^

Yeah I saw it the other day, looks quite interesting.
I don't know what I'd do with it, but all these international relations/development studies/sociology/political science courses are all the ones i wanna do.

Neo, does that girl you know like it? does she have like a career that she's heading for with it?

whoa I didn’t know anu had a development studies degree. Newcastle finally has some firm competition in this field.
