For those of us who are opting for on campus accommodation, is there any internet access in our rooms? If so, what is it like? Wireless/Wired? How fast is it, is it filtered, what type of restrictions are placed on it (open ports, bandwidth, daily/monthly quotas etc)?

you need to buy a blue cable when you get to uni, theyre like $5 or something

access to the intranet is free, but if you want to surf the net you need to put credit on your internet account (can do that online or at the cashiers), oh yeah you need your own computer

if you dont have a computer you can use the computers at jack cross for free or the library (but if you want to surf the net you need credit on your account)

i cant remember how much it is but it's like 1.1cents per megabyte or something (for usage not to buy)

GRWAWHADB!!!!

It better not be that much! I would easily rack up AT LEAST 10GB from just light surfing (without even downloading movies/songs/etc). I really don't feel like paying $100 a month for internet...

:/ That is ridiculous. Half that (5GB) would cost $55 a month. There is no way i would be able to pay $50 a month for internet, AND live withing the confines of 5 GB in a single month.

Surely there has to be other alternatives… Is it possible to get your own internet connection hooked up? That would be like 43 times cheaper and better...

The only real alternative is wireless broadband. The coverage at uni isn't TOO brilliant, but through Internode you can get 5GB for $40/month.
As to filtering, I used to run the netdirect page 24/7 which bypassed the proxy.
And no, I don't think you can get a private connection.

you could try your own prepaid wireless, but again im not sure what the reception would be like given that the campus is about 5km out of wagga behind a massive hill

you would just have to monitor your internet usage dude

like, put $20 bucks on at the beginning of each month. you won't run up a huge bill. you can only use the internet you have credit for.

theyre lax with debiting accounts sometimes too. i had $7 credit for a year and had something like 177 mb and my account wasnt debited for ages

TPG has 100GB for 50 bucks. I would like to be able to install a service at your dorm?

No you can't run your own ADSL service into the uni. The Optus/Internode wireless reception can be full speed depending where on campus you are (I used to run the dongle to my window sill and it was fine).
If you bypass the proxy using netdirect you can easily rack up $50 or more of usage before you're cut off (since traffic not going through the proxy can be billed 24-48 hours later).
