What is the internet at UNSW like? Is it unmetered (or do you have to buy credit etc)?


How far is the range of its Internet (i.e. can it be accessed from the colleges and dorm's on campus)?

Pretty sure colleges have their own thing.

UNSW's wireless has been free for a couple of years now.

Colleges, well at least the kensington ones, have wired internet, which is not free.

new college village, for example, has their own wireless system.

uniwide can be accessed throughout campus.

no limit on download, provided it is legal.

A few ground rules about Uniwide.

It's unavailable in the colleges as making it so would put too much strain on the network as it is. Hence why college kids have to pay for their own.

Don't fucking use torrents. It slows the network down and makes you an easy target for UNSW IT to fine or ban.

Epic fast... on average I've heard it gets up to 350kb/s. I've only had it at 1MB/s+ around 3 times lol.

i was thinking bout using rapidshare, megauploads etc sites. Then again i had a friend who dled a mp3 file off mediafire and got issued a warning

You can always use library computers (which are extremely fast, btw), but the queues right after the hour are hectic. Uniwide is free, you use your student number and unipass (the password you login for myUNSW) for accessing it, so the uni sort of keeps track of everything you do. If you're not sure if downloading something is illegal or not, I recommend not using uniwide to do so. I've seen lots people play RPGs and YouTube with uni comps or their own laptops, so judge for yourself.
