Surely the Coalition were always much more likely to support this over the Greens.
NatsNatsNatsNatsNatsFF FFFFFFFFF
Number of Nationals in the Senate: 5
Number of Greens in the Senate: 5
Family First and Nick Xenophon cancel eachother out.

Number of Liberals in Senate: 32
Number of ALP in Senate: 32

Likelihood of Liberals supporting the censorship: low.

Assuming all Nationals support it (unlikely) and all Libs and Labour vote along party lines (likely), that's a tie.

I read this on Whirlpool but it said they don't need to vote on this. Howard brought in enough legislative power for them to just do it.

Or do they?

The Coalition won't split over this. Judas Joyce might cross the floor but the parties themselves won't split.

Jockmonkey: Check the EFA website. It's been covered and the answer is almost certainly that they cannot.

Basically, without the support of the Internet industry, they can't pass a bill like this without putting it to a vote.

But do you think the Internet industry is going to support this? :p

Also, even child advocacy groups are slamming the Internet filter now, claiming it's a diversion against the real fight against child abuse and technologically unfeasible:

Why does that man persist? Is it really worth the fight?
It'll go down in flames in the senate. Public opinion is against it. His best argument is that opposing it is supporting CP.
Trying to please the religious right?

A mandatory filter will definitely require legislation.

SYDNEY PROTEST AGAINST THE RUDD COMMUNIST PARTY CENSORSHIP!
I take offence to that, Communism is about freedom and openness - the very opposite of censorship.

In fact, you would not be surprised to see CPA (Communist Party of Australia) members at that protest.

No, I assure you that my people will not be there, then that's against our motto and they're not true commies.

What's against your motto, who's not true commies, and which group do you speak for?

That's okey, once you're older and more mature, you will understand the difference between communism and imitation communism.
